Students constantly ask whether they should fill 10, 50, or 200 choices. The fear is that a long list will somehow 'lower' their college. It won't — the algorithm always tries your top choice first, so adding more options at the bottom can only help, never hurt.
Why a Short List Is Dangerous
If none of your listed options has a seat available in your category when it's your turn, you get no allotment for that round. A list of only 10–20 choices makes this a real risk, especially in competitive categories and branches.
No allotment means waiting for the next round with fewer seats left — a weak position to be in.
The Recommended Range
Aim for a comprehensive list — many students benefit from 100–200 well-chosen, correctly ordered options. The goal isn't to pad the list randomly, but to cover the full spread from dream colleges down to genuine safety choices.
Quality of ordering matters as much as quantity.
Structure: Reach, Realistic, Safe
Order your list in three layers:
- Reach (top): colleges slightly above your score — cutoffs can fall in later rounds.
- Realistic (middle): colleges where your percentile clearly clears last year's cutoff.
- Safe (bottom): colleges you're well above, as a guaranteed-ish fallback.
Always list strictly by genuine preference within and across these layers.
