Once percentiles are out, the panic question begins: 'With this percentile, which college and branch will I actually get?' It feels impossible to answer manually because Maharashtra has hundreds of colleges and thousands of branch-category-round cutoff combinations.
The honest answer: no one can guarantee a college before allotment — but you can estimate your chances accurately using previous-year cutoff data.
How a College Predictor Actually Works
A good predictor compares your percentile (or rank) against the previous year's closing cutoffs for each college-branch-category combination, then classifies each option:
- Safe: your score is comfortably above last year's closing cutoff.
- Moderate: your score is close to the cutoff — possible, not guaranteed.
- Reach: your score is below the cutoff, but worth listing because cutoffs can fall in later rounds.
A strong preference list contains a healthy mix of all three.
Why 'Which College' Depends on More Than Percentile
Two students with the same percentile can get very different colleges. What changes the answer:
- Category (OPEN vs OBC/SC/ST/EWS/SEBC/VJ/NT) — reserved-category cutoffs are usually lower.
- Home University vs Other Than Home University seats.
- Branch demand — CSE/IT cut far higher than core branches at the same college.
- CAP round — later rounds often have lower cutoffs as seats shift.
Use Percentile Bands as a Starting Point Only
Broadly and indicatively: very high percentiles (99+) target elite government/autonomous colleges for premium branches; mid-to-high 90s target good private and autonomous colleges; lower percentiles still have plenty of options, especially in core branches and later rounds.
These are orientation guesses, not promises. The only reliable approach is to check each option against real cutoff data for your exact category and seat type.
